Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

Blepharoplasty surgery is a procedure that focuses on rejuvenation of the upper and / or lower eyelids. This procedure removes excess skin and wrinkles from the eyelids, as well as some underlying fat. Many people develop extra skin and bulging of their eyelids as they age, and blepharoplasty surgery aims to correct this. It is important to know it is not possible to remove every wrinkle and fold around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty in Scottsdale could help you refresh your facial appearance and feel more comfortable in your own skin. Dr. Stutman and his team could help you understand what to expect from this form of facial surgery, so reach out today to get started.

The Goals of Blepharoplasty

The goals of blepharoplasty surgery are to remove the extra skin, flatten the bulging of underyling fat, and if necessary, tighten the eyelids leaving a fine line scar that is minimally noticeable and easily hidden with conservative use of makeup.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The ideal candidate for Blepharoplasty is a person with skin redundancy and / or bulging of the eyelids. People with sunken eyes, bulging eyes, or previous eye problems may not be a candidate for this procedure.

Blepharoplasty in Detail

Eyelid surgery can treat different portions of the eye, including the:

Upper Eyelids

Under local or twilight anesthetic, an elliptical incision is made to excise the extra upper eyelid skin extending into the “crow’s feet” at the corner of the eye. Then, the bulging fat at the inner corner of the eye is trimmed if necessary. Other problem areas may then be addressed. The skin is closed with a suture, and a dressing may be applied.

Lower Eyelids

Lower eyelid surgery requires general anesthetic. Under general anesthetic, the bulging fat is removed through an incision on the inner or outer surface of the eyelid. Once Dr. Stutman is satisfied with the contour of the eyelid, any extra skin is removed. A lid tightening procedure is often performed as well. The incisions are then closed with sutures, and a dressing applied.

Recovering from Eyelid Surgery

After your blepharoplasty procedure, you will spend a couple of hours in the recovery room at the surgery center before you go home. You will need someone to pick you up from the center because your eyes will be swollen. The eyelids will be bruised and swollen, and they will feel tight. You will need to keep your head elevated on 2 pillows for 48 hours while lying down. Place iced oval eye pads on the eyes for the first 24 hours. Some oozing from the eyelid incision is normal for a day or two. The sutures will be removed in 5 – 7 days by Dr. Stutman. You should not wear contact lenses or makeup for 1 week. The scars are permanent; however, they are placed in such a position that they are barely discernable after a reasonable period of time.

What Are the Risks of Blepharoplasty?

As with any surgery, there is a possibility that you will experience a complication. These include bleeding after the surgery and infection, and both of these resolve over time. Undesirably thick scars are very rare, but possible. An extremely rare case of blindness in one eye has been reported in the surgical literature.

When it comes to blepharoplasty, the type of anesthesia used typically depends on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s preferences. In most cases, local anesthesia with sedation is commonly used to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety during the surgery. This approach allows the patient to remain awake but relaxed, while the surgeon numbs the eyelid area to minimize any pain or discomfort. General anesthesia may also be an option for more complex or extensive eyelid surgeries, where the patient is fully asleep and unaware during the procedure. Ultimately, the choice of anesthesia is determined by the surgeon after a thorough evaluation of the individual’s medical history and the specific requirements of the eyelid surgery.

Understanding the financial aspect of this procedure is crucial for making an informed decision. Blepharoplasty cost can vary depending on various factors such as the surgeon’s experience, location, facility fees, anesthesia, and extent of the procedure (for example upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both). It is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to get an accurate quote tailored to your specific needs. Remember, investing in your appearance and self-confidence through blepharoplasty can have long-lasting benefits.

The answer is yes, blepharoplasty can indeed be performed alongside other cosmetic surgeries such as facelifts, fat grafting, laser resurfacing, brow lifts, or even non-surgical treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, and chemical peels. By combining procedures, patients can address multiple concerns simultaneously, leading to a more harmonious and balanced overall aesthetic outcome. Dr. Stutman is a professional, kind, and talented plastic surgeon. He treated my double chin with liposuction and did a terrific job. The procedure was painless, and I appreciated that he took the time to explain the procedure to me. I also appreciate that patient safety is number one priority as he took the time to ask me about my medical history and any medications I take to decrease any possible risks associated with the procedure. One week after my chin was treated I noticed a significant result. I had some mild bruising after one week which disappeared after about 10 days postoperatively. It is now 6 months since my procedure and I don’t have any visible scars and the fullness I used to have is completely gone. I am no longer insecure about taking pictures from a profile angle. I am feeling so much more confident in my appearance and even look 5 years younger as a result of the procedure. I am so thankful I saw Dr. Stutman and would recommend him to others!

Dr. Stutman performed a facial procedure for me on an area that had been bothering for many years. Although I was always self conscious about it, I was unable to find a surgeon I trusted to do the work. Facial procedures are not something to take lightly. I wanted to be sure the doctor I chose would not only be an experienced surgeon but respected by both his peers and patients. When I met with him for the initial consultation I was comforted by his wealth of knowledge and also by his appreciation that I was nervous about the procedure. He was able to ease my anxiety and ensure I would be pleased with the aesthetic outcome. I am vary happy I was able to find Dr. Stutman.

“Very simple and easy surgery. I went back to work after 2 days. Best money ever spent! It took me back 10 years. I think I even look better now than I did in my 30’s. Dr. Stutman gave me curves and a nice round booty with the fat he took out around my upper/lower abs, flanks and waist. Would recommend to anyone.”
