What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, treats the signs of aging in the lower face and neck: jowls, deep folds and loose neck skin. Dr. Stutman tightens the underlying muscle layer in every facelift, rather than pulling the skin alone, which is what keeps results natural and long-lasting. A neck lift is often done at the same time to sharpen the jawline and neck.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Stutman
- Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
- Oculoplastic and aesthetic fellowship with Dr. Mark Codner in Atlanta, focused on the eyelids and the structures around the eye.
- Published facial anatomy research on the tear trough, the hollow between the lower eyelid and the cheek.
- The whole face, planned together. Eyelid surgery, brow lift and fat grafting can be done at the same time as your facelift.
Training Behind the Results
Dr. Stutman is lead author, with Dr. Mark Codner, of a review of the anatomy and treatment options for the tear trough, the hollow where the lower eyelid meets the cheek. Facial rejuvenation at Stutman Plastic Surgery is planned around the eyelids and midface as well as the jawline.
Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 2012 →How long results last depends on age, skin quality and lifestyle. Tightening the deeper muscle layer, which Dr. Stutman does in every facelift, is what helps results last longer than a skin-only lift.
Ask what to expect for you →Facelift vs. Neck Lift
Many patients have both. Dr. Stutman recommends the combination that fits your face at your consultation.
| Facelift | Neck Lift | |
|---|---|---|
| Treats | Jowls, deep folds, sagging cheeks and lower face | Loose neck skin, neck bands, a soft jawline |
| Incision | In front of and behind the ear, into the hair above the sideburn | A small incision under the chin, plus behind the ear |
| Muscle layer | Tightened in every case | Neck muscle tightened |
| Drains | Small drains, usually out in 1 to 2 days | Same |
Eyelids & Brow
Eyelid surgery and a brow lift are often done at the same time, which is where Dr. Stutman’s oculoplastic training matters most.
Fat Grafting
Your own fat can restore volume to hollow cheeks and temples alongside the lift.
Botox & Fillers
Botox and Juvéderm can be added at the time of surgery to refine the result.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Gradually return to exercise, and start silicone scar gel for three to four months.
Back to normal social activities, with makeup.
Remaining swelling settles and the incisions keep fading.
FAQsFrequently Asked Questions
How much does a facelift in Scottsdale cost?
Your quote depends on whether you need a facelift, neck lift or both, and on any added procedures such as eyelid surgery or fat grafting. You receive a written quote after your consultation, and financing is available through CareCredit and Alphaeon Credit.
How soon can I go back to work after a facelift?
Most patients return to work in about two weeks and to normal social activities, with makeup, in about a month.
How long does a facelift last?
A facelift typically lasts seven to ten years, depending on age, skin quality and lifestyle. Your face keeps aging, but from a more youthful starting point.
Where are the facelift incisions?
In front of and behind the ear, usually extending into the hair above the sideburn. A neck lift adds a small incision under the chin. Most patients can wear their hair any way they like once healed.
What is a mini facelift?
A mini facelift is a less extensive lift with a quicker recovery, suited to earlier signs of aging. Dr. Stutman will recommend the type of lift that fits your face and goals.
Can I combine a facelift with eyelid surgery?
Yes. Eyelid surgery, brow lift, fat grafting, Botox and fillers can all be done at the same time as your facelift.
What are the risks of a facelift?
As with any surgery, risks include bleeding (hematoma), fluid collection (seroma), infection, thick scarring, injury to a facial nerve, blood clots and delayed healing. A facelift also requires general anesthesia, which carries its own risks. Dr. Stutman reviews these with you before surgery.
Will I have bruising and numbness?
Swelling and bruising are normal for the first one to two weeks. Some temporary numbness around the ears and cheeks is common and usually fades as nerves heal.
