With aging or significant weight loss the face will exhibit signs of tissue laxity including;
- Skin looseness of the cheeks and neck
- Deepening of facial wrinkles
- Sagging of the cheeks/jowls
- Loss of cheek projection
These changes can make you look tired and older than you feel. Facial rejuvenation procedures can help return you to a more youthful and refreshed appearance. For instance, a Facelift in Scottsdale could be the ideal procedure for restoring life to your face and turning back the clock.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Facelift or Neck Lift?
Men and women who have facial aging but feel that their appearance does not reflect their health and vigor. Patients who have significant health problems or are active smokers may not be candidates for facelift and neck lift procedures. Dr. Stutman will review your medical/surgical history at your initial consultation to better evaluate if you are a good candidate for surgery.
Does a Facelift Require Incisions?
An incision is made in front of and behind your ears, this will usually extend into the hair above your sideburns. These incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible, and most patients are able to wear their hair in any fashion without noticeable scarring. If a neck lift is performed, a small incision is made below your chin.
The Procedure Explained
A facelift or neck lift is performed under general anesthesia at either a surgery center or hospital, depending on your medical history and preference. Incisions are made and the skin is then stretched, and the extra skin removed. All patients will have tightening of the underlying muscle layer for long lasting results. A drain is placed beneath the skin to avoid a collection of fluid beneath the skin. Additional procedures such as blepharoplasty, browlift, fat grafting, Botox, and/or Juvéderm may be performed at the time of the initial surgery.
Recovering From a Facelift
If performed at a surgery center, you will spend a few hours in recovery before going home. You will need someone to take you home and stay with you for the first few days. Some patients may need to stay overnight in the hospital depending on your medical history and/or preferences. Small drains will be placed at the time of surgery, which are usually removed after 1-2 days. You will experience swelling and bruising over the first 1-2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to normal social activities with makeup by 1 month after surgery.
Do Facelifts Come with Risks?
As with any surgery, there is a possibility that you will experience a complication. These include bleeding after the surgery (hematoma), undesirably thick scars, fluid collection beneath the skin (seroma), infection, damage to facial nerves, blood clots, and delayed wound healing. This surgery requires a general anesthetic, which carries some risk as well.
